In these ever darkening days in post-constitutional America, I will take every sign of dissent, however big or small, wherever I chose to see it. I saw one yesterday.
I, of course, know nothing of him, his convictions, or his politics but, yesterday, it warmed [my] heart when, instead of delegating the job as powerful and prudent business “people” are prone to do, Mr. Frank Harrison, Chairman and CEO of Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated, grabbed the microphone himself in Charlotte, NC and delivered the following invocation on a live, national TV broadcast before the start of the Coca-Cola 600 (1):
OK. Let’s pray. If you would, please, bow your heads.
Dear Heavenly Father, in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, we come before You and say thank you for this great day [and] the chance to celebrate Memorial Day with the Coca Cola 600 family.
Thank you Lord for the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice; they’ve given their lives for our country, the United States of America. God, bless their families that remain here on earth. The wives, the husbands, the sons, [and] the daughters of these fallen heroes. And Lord God, thank you for the ultimate gift you gave us, your son Jesus Christ, so that we may have eternal life by believing in him.
And God, draw us back to yourself, as a nation. And God, bless America.
And I pray for protection, today, for the drivers and the teams. Give us a fun, exciting, and safe day.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
As more and more people are starting to realize, Mr. Obama’s America is much closer to the world of Havel’s greengrocer (2) than the republic provided by our Founding Fathers. We now live in a time when everyone from the most local of public school superintendents to the most powerful chief executives of the largest government contractors will mindlessly recite the approved buzz words/phrases about diversity and inclusion no matter how irrelevant it is to the task at hand because it is “good for business”…actually, it is REQUIRED for business. They would rarely, if ever, dare risk such an unabashedly Christian message…or a message that is all-inclusive in its brevity (lacking an explicit list of all special classes that must be acknowledged by name or it will be considered discriminatory)…being tied to them or their sponsored event
In the case of public schools, that is now a very open requirement but, given everything we know about the politicization of all levels of the executive branch under this president, it is not hard to imagine what is going on elsewhere. (Do you really think Target picked this time and place to elevate the bathroom issue because it was actually good for business?) To once again steal a theme from Solzhenitsyn, we are now to the point that we should assume that such a thing is true and require them to prove to us that it is not possible (…or at least destroy the hard drives).
While Mr. Harrison’s invocation may not seem like such a big deal to most of you today, I recommend you take note and enjoy any acts of opposition to the modern totalitarian ideology (now rebranded for western liberals with sensitive dispositions as Progressivism) while they last. No matter how insignificant they may seem, the “system” must suppress even the most modest attempts to live outside of the lie. (Go read Havel.) I suspect we will look back on things like Harrison’s invocation in a few years and consider them unimaginable…because they will be unimaginable.
